You all know that I love an easy to accomplish DIY project. It’s basically my jam. When I did my entryway makeover last month, I really wanted to display a piece of abstract watercolor artwork, and after browsing Pinterest I felt pretty confident that I could make my own. This project does not require you to be an expert artist, which is great for me. If you can draw a straight line, then you’re good to go!

Materials (I’ve included links to some of my favorites*):

Watercolor Paper
Watercolor Paint
Paint Brush
Picture Frame

I started by tracing the matte that came with the picture frame onto a piece of watercolor paper. You can also use the back of the frame as a guide as well.

Once you’ve traced the outline, cut out the piece of watercolor paper.

Add a small amount of watercolor paint from a tube to a container like a plate or palette. If you have a watercolor palette and would like to use that instead, it will also work just fine. Next, add a small amount of water to the paint to thin it out slightly.

Starting at the top of your paper, begin to paint a thin line across. Then, gradually build on that to make it a bit thicker.

I decided to paint 5 lines total, going from dark to light. To do this, I added more water to the paint with each new line. By the time I reached the bottom, the last line was extremely light. If you decide at any point that one of the lines should be darker or lighter, just add either more paint or more water. It is impossible to mess up!

Once the paint is dry, add the art to your frame and display it wherever you’d like! I love how this complements the decor in my entry way. You can use any color that you choose so that it fits your decor. Play around with it and have fun, it’s really so easy! Don’t forget to share your DIY photos with me on Instagram or Facebook, I can’t wait to see what you make!
